The story of Pennebaker Homes begins with its founder, Jim Pennebaker, whose career in the building trades started in 1969 as a rough carpenter. Jim’s early years on job sites across Southeast Michigan shaped his belief that precision, craftsmanship, and integrity should define every home—values that still guide the company today.
By 1982, Jim took a significant step forward, building his first custom home in Northville, Michigan. His talents and reputation grew quickly. Over the next decade, he became a partner in two successful companies—Mastercraft Carpentry and Mastercraft Development—balancing both high-quality carpentry contracting and full home-building operations. These ventures allowed Jim to refine his approach to custom residential construction and build a loyal network of tradespeople, clients, and collaborators.
During this time, Jim’s son Scott Pennebaker was never far from the work. Starting in his teenage years and continuing through high school and college, Scott spent his summers learning the craft firsthand—sweeping job sites, swinging a hammer, and absorbing the standards of workmanship his father upheld.
After graduating, Scott joined the family business full-time in 1992, bringing fresh perspective and a shared commitment to the family legacy.
As demand for their custom homes continued to grow, Jim and Scott established Pennebaker Homes as an incorporated company in 1999, officially becoming partners. Together, they blended decades of hands-on experience with a personalized approach to homebuilding—treating each project as a one-of-a-kind reflection of the homeowners they serve.
Today, Pennebaker Homes proudly operates as a second-generation, family-owned custom home builder, grounded in the same principles that shaped its beginnings more than 50 years ago. Together, their expertise spans over 70 years and the company’s reputation for craftsmanship, honesty, and long-term relationships continues to distinguish the Pennebaker name across Southeast Michigan.
